The Board of Directors of International Paper has appointed Joy Roman to the newly created role of Senior Vice President, Chief People and Strategy Officer, reporting to President and CEO Andy Silvernail. Starting February 1, Roman will lead International Paper’s talent development, organizational effectiveness, and business strategy efforts. In addition to HR and strategy, Roman will be responsible for maximizing the company’s overall impact through sustainability and communications functions.
Roman joins IP from Berry Global, a producer and distributor of plastic packaging solutions, where she served as Chief People & Strategy Officer since April 2024. She began her career as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company.
The U.S.-based company also appointed David Robbie to its Board of Directors and to the Audit & Finance and Public Policy & Environment Committees, effective February 11. Robbie, 61, joins IP’s Board following his service on the Board of DS Smith since 2019. This appointment follows the acquisition of DS Smith by International Paper on January 31, 2025, to create a new global operator in sustainable packaging solutions.
During his time on DS Smith’s Board, Robbie was Senior Independent Director in 2022 and also served as Chairman and member of DS Smith’s audit, nominations, and compensation committees.
“On behalf of the Board of Directors of IP, I am pleased to welcome David to our board. His strong financial background and international business experience, along with his deep knowledge of DS Smith, will help us maximize the best of both companies as we work together to accelerate growth, improve profitability, and serve customers worldwide,” said Andy Silvernail, President and CEO of International Paper.
