Metsä Tissue has submitted a final planning application to the East Riding of Yorkshire Council for a paper mill in Goole, UK. The mill would produce 240,000 tons of fresh fiber-based tissue annually, approximately 20% of the UK’s current tissue volume. It is expected to generate over 400 direct jobs, with additional economic benefits along the entire supply chain.
Currently, about 40% of the tissue used in the UK and Ireland is imported. This new mill could increase national production, bringing self-sufficiency to about 85% and reducing transportation needs. As part of the planning process, Metsä Tissue held two public consultations, in March and November 2024, to allow the public to review the plans and provide feedback on the final proposal for the paper mill.
The Goole mill is part of Metsä Tissue’s Future Mill program, which uses cutting-edge technologies for efficient operation with strong environmental performance. The company aims for fossil fuel-free production by 2030.
